Telegraphic transfers are a secure and convenient way to send or receive electronic funds directly into an overseas account. The funds are deposited into the nominated bank account generally within 3 working days.
You can choose for the funds to be either in Australian dollars or the currency of the destination country (note some restrictions may apply*). The countries we can telegraphic transfer funds to can change, call 13 12 21 9am to 5pm, weekdays to ensure your destination is available.

If you are:
As 1CUSCAL will not accept funds transferred from overseas directly to themselves, your funds will need to be processed through an intermediary bank. You must advise the sending financial institution that it is necessary to forward the payment via an intermediary bank. It is the prerogative of the overseas sending financial institution to nominate an intermediary bank. Neither Teachers Mutual Bank nor CUSCAL may determine this. If the overseas financial institution does not nominate an intermediary, however, you may be able to nominate either an intermediary bank of your own choosing, or CUSCAL’s preferred intermediary bank, JP Morgan Sydney branch.
The intermediary bank will charge a processing fee, which may be deducted from your payment. Depending on the circumstances, such as the location of the sending financial institution and its commercial arrangements, processing via more than one intermediary bank may be necessary.
Once the funds arrive at the intermediary bank, the funds are then converted to Australian dollars (if need be) and forwarded to CUSCAL. This is the reason that CUSCAL and their swift code CUSCAU2SXXX is to be placed on the paperwork. It is so that the intermediary bank can forward the funds to CUSCAL. Please note again, the sending bank is not to send the funds directly to CUSCAL. Once CUSCAL receive the funds, they will forward the monies to Teachers Mutual Bank. CUSCAL will recognise the BSB 812-170 as belonging to Teachers Mutual Bank and once the funds arrive at Teachers Mutual Bank, they are promptly deposited to your account. Please be aware that CUSCAL take a $6.21 fee, from the amount you send, for processing this payment. The Sending Bank and the Intermediary Institution are able to deduct a processing fee for international transfers.
The Transfer normally takes 1-4 business days depending on the individual financial institution.
If any part of the instruction is missing or incorrect, the payment may be automatically rejected or returned to the sending bank.
It is sender’s responsibility to trace the funds from the sending bank. Due to the privacy regulation, Teachers Mutual Bank are unable to perform this duty.
An intermediary bank relationship is established between financial institutions who agree to provide deposit and/or initiate payments on behalf of another bank that may not have a local banking presence. It is also known as a correspondent bank.
A single payment may involve multiple banks to deliver the funds to the beneficiary, especially when they are outside Australia. Each bank in the payment chain will assess fees for processing the funds transfer. These fees must be allocated either to the beneficiary or the sender/remitter.
If the funds have not been returned to the sending bank, the sender can request a search, by the sending bank, on these funds via the Swift system.
A bank draft is a cheque issued in a foreign currency, it can only be deposited into the account of the person the draft is made payable to, making it safe and secure. Cheque clearance times may apply when depositing cheque(s) to overseas banks.
A bank draft is available in a wide range of currencies - including Australian dollars. We recommend a draft in the destination country’s currency to avoid additional exchange rate fees or delays at the other end. You can either collect from our offices (usually available within 2-3 working days) or have it sent by Express Post to your home, school or business address within Australia. You can also nominate someone else to collect it if you advise us on the bank draft order form (they will be required to show identification). Contact us first to confirm it has arrived.

1. You can convert most foreign currencies through Teachers Mutual Bank including:
(a) Notes (coins and some small denominations will not be converted)
(b) Travellers cheques (if signed in front of a Teachers Mutual Bank officer); and
(c) Personal or company cheques (if less than six months old and payable to the account holders or endorsed; United States Dollar cheques must be endorsed).
2. Where the amount converted is equivalent to less than $25,000 (AUD), the conversion will be made at the daily buying exchange rate determined by Western Union or American Express®, and will only be paid into your Teachers Mutual Bank account. For conversions received after 2.30pm, the following working day’s rate may apply. The exchange rate is determined by the cut off time of the supplier.
3. Where the amount is converted to $25,000 (AUD) or more the cheque will be sent on a collection basis to the overseas provider. Western Union determines the exchange rate upon receipt of the cheque, while American Express® determines the exchange rate on the day of the deposit.
4. If the amount converted is:
(a) less than $5,000 (AUD) the funds should be credited to your account within 1-2 working days. Please note that the funds will not be cleared for up to 10 weeks. If the cheque is dishonoured, we will recover the funds credited to your account from you, including the paying bank dishonour fees and any interest accrued on the deposit from the day the proceeds were credited to your account.
(b) more than $5,000 (AUD) but less than $25,000 (AUD) the funds should be credited to your account within 1-2 working days but will not be available to draw against until the funds are cleared, which can take up to 10 weeks. If the cheque is dishonoured, we will recover the funds credited to your account from you, including the paying bank dishonour fees and any interest accrued on the deposit from the day the proceeds were credited to your account.
(c) $25,000 (AUD) or more, we will not credit the funds to your account until 45 working days after the deposit has been made. If the cheque is subsequently dishonoured, we will recover the funds credited to your account from you, including the paying bank dishonour fees and any interest accrued on the deposit from the day the proceeds were credited to your account.
Note: We reserve the right to clear cheques on a collection basis regardless of amount.
