Gender equality on our Board

Following recent elections, female representation on the Board of Teachers Credit Union now stands at 50% - a relative rarity among Boards in Australia.

Maree O’Halloran was elected as a Director at the credit union’s AGM on 17 October, bringing the total number of women Directors to four. The eight person Board is chaired by John Kouimanos. Director Linda Green was also elected Deputy Chair of the Board following the 2009 AGM.

The 50% female representation on the Teachers Credit Union Board is in stark contrast to the 2008 statistics for ASX top 200 listed companies, where women hold 8.3% of Board Directorships.

“Like many financial institutions, our ratio of male to female members is pretty evenly matched, so it’s appropriate that our Board composition reflects that,” said Steve James, CEO of Teachers Credit Union.

“Gender equality is an important issue, and we make every effort to close the gap wherever possible. Our pay equity gap is currently 14.97%, compared to a finance industry average of 31.9% and an Australian average of 17.2%.*

Newly elected Teachers Credit Union Board Member Maree O’Halloran is currently a Director and Solicitor at the Welfare Rights Centre, and was previously President of the NSW Teachers Federation.

Teachers Credit Union has also been recognised by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) as an Employer of Choice for Women for 2009.
